Choosing A Paper For Your Business Cards

You may always be judged by the first impression you make, and this is the same for your business card. A distinctive business card can mean the difference between a prospective client tossing your card in the trash or hanging on to it for future reference.

One of the most important things to think about when ordering your business card is the paper you decide to have it printed on.

One consideration you will want to think about is the thickness or weight of the paper your card is printed on. Paper is often described by weight and the standard business card is usually printed on card stock between 80 and 100 pounds. This quality measurement refers to how much 500 sheets will weigh once it’s been produced at a paper mill.

There is also yet another way paper stock is described; using the term “points.”A point is equal to .001 inch of paper thickness measured by a micrometer. A typical business card will be on stock measured at about 10 points.

To ensure an impressive feel to the person receiving your business card, have it printed on heavy paper stock.

Of course, the weight is not the only consideration – the finish you select will also help it stand out. Most business cards are made with standard paper stock which is a white, heavy paper stock with a smooth finish.

Some business owners now want to include a photo on their business card; if this is your case, you may want to consider a glossy finish instead. A glossy finish will help your photo catch the eye. This finish also works well if you have an intricate logo that looks good in a glossy format.

A textured finish may be desirable to you as it has a very nice “feel” to the touch and will leave an impression. Light, subtle vertical and horizontal lines can be felt with a linen texture. Vellum has a slightly rougher finish is even more distinctive to the touch.

Going with a different colour than white for your card stock can also make an impression. If selecting a diferent colour of card stock, you will also need to bare in mind the colours of your text. Readability is important!

If you’re concerned about the environment, you can also make choices with regard to what type of paper you will use for your cards. Most business card printers will be able to offer you recycled and/or partically recycled paper.

Selecting the card stock that your business card will be printed on is just as valuable for the impression you leave as the card’s overall design. In order to make a lasting impression and a statement about your company’s goals and values, be sure to select your business card paper with a lot of consideration.
