In Los Angeles, there have been 3 supermarket makeovers in the last year. Two supermarkets-The Pavilions in Marina Del Rey retained the outer shell of its building but was completely remodeled on the inside. The Pavilions in West Hollywood was demolished to make way for a brand new building. Lastly, increment refurbishment of the interior of Ralph’s Supermarket in the West Pico District was carried out.

A common trend among all 3 supermarket construction projects is the entrance. Previously, the entrances brought you face to face with aisles of food and consumer products. After the renovations and remodeling, you’re now confronted with boutique specialty stands. A soup kiosk, a smoothie kiosk, special item bins and the like. The remodeling projects in the 2 Pavilions took about 11 months to finish. The Ralph’s project took less than 3 months. The difference to the consumer is observable. The Pavilions seem to look like brand new stores while Ralph’s is starting to unleash its unique beauty.

These stores now have self-checkout aisles – this is wonderful news. This quality allows you to have easy entrance and exit access – most of the time. If you purchase alcohol, you can be slowed down as an attendant has to verify your age. This scene isn’t anymore an issue at Ralph’s since this can be done remotely through a handheld console that’s carried by the attendant.
